Police are searching for a grey-haired jogger in his 60s after he allegedly kicked a baby cygnet in the head because he ‘couldn’t be bothered’ to go around the poor animal.
The baby swan had been left severely injured and vets suspected it may have brain damage due to the attack.
The saddening incident occurred in Richmond Park in London on Monday. Officers have said the runner was a man around 60 years old and with grey hair.
Royal Parks Police took to Twitter and wrote: “#Witnessappeal Yesterday at about 17:30 hours at Pen Ponds, #Richmondpark a jogger kicked a newborn Cygnet out of his way instead of going around. The cygnet is currently being cared for @Swan_Sanctuary. Unfortunately it’s not looking good for the Cygnet.”
The poor baby swan received treatment at the Swan Sanctuary but it was ‘not looking good.’
In another tweet, the force described the man as a “white male, about 60 years old, 5ft 6in, grey hair, wearing black running shorts and vest.”
It added: “We have just spoken to the Swan Sanctuary who have said, ‘Sadly he is still desperately poorly’. Thankfully he is in good hands.”
Sadly, the baby swan has died, triggering outrage across the UK.
“His injures were too severe. The suspect was seen to kick another cygnet, which thankfully managed to escape to the water. The jogger had a logo on his running top and is balding,” Royal Parks Police wrote on Twitter.
The Swan Sanctuary also blasted the jogger who “deliberately booted this newborn cygnet out of his way rather than swerve round him.”
The search is now on to find the jogger accused of kicking the baby swan in the head. For any information, please contact 07920 586546 and quote reference number 0705738/20.
