Beijing has been under extreme watch due to officials’ fears that China could be facing another deadly coronavirus outbreak as the newly-reported daily cases reached their highest in two months.
On Sunday, June 14, China has allegedly reported 57 new COVID-19 cases, a number that represents the most daily infections in the last two months.
According to the reports, a new outbreak occurred at the capital’s Xinfadi wholesale market which is believed to be the source of dozens of new infections.
As the National Health Commission reported, 36 of the new cases are a result of local virus transmissions.
Following the local outbreak, a strict lockdown has once again been imposed on eleven residential estates surrounding the fresh produce market.
“In accordance with the principle of putting the safety of the masses and health first, we have adopted lockdown measures for the Xinfadi market and surrounding neighborhoods,” district official Chu Junwei explained during a briefing.
As Mr. Junwei added, the area is running in a “wartime emergency mode” whereas all exits and entrances have been barred with guards stationed outside the quarantined area to make sure no one leaves unnoticed.
In addition to the lockdown, the authorities are determined to test all people who work at the market, live in its proximity, or had visited it in the last two weeks.
