Dame Vera Lynn was just more than a wartime singer, but a beacon of the British resilience and inspiration of hope during the war.
Her classic songs ‘We’ll Meet Again, ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘There’ll Always Be An England’ was a source of great morale booster in the frontlines and the homeland wartime residents.
The songs gave hopes even in desperate situations, while Hitler was threatening to cross the English Channel from France to wipe off the British existence. Her Majesty had been the first person to be told the news after she enjoyed decades of friendship with the wartime singer. Dame Vera’s assistant Susan Flood told the press that ‘Her Majesty was very, very sad. They sent their deepest condolences to the family.’

She and Dame Vera enjoyed friendship of over 70 years.
She had met King George VI, his daughter the Queen, the Queen Mother and many other Windsors, which lead Prince Charles to post on Clarence House Twitter account sharing a number of pictures of the singer with the words: ‘Remembering Dame Vera Lynn’.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to Dame Vera, saying her ‘charm and magical voice entranced and uplifted our country in some of our darkest hours.
Her voice will live on to lift the hearts of generations to come’.Her family said in a statement they were ‘deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers at the age of 103’.
