Mike Tyson is set to face Roy Jones Jr.
in his comeback bout following months after the 54-year-old heavyweight champion announced his return to the ring.
The 8-round exhibition fight between Tyson, 54, and Jones Jr., 51, will take place on September 12, 2020, and will be available for watching via pay-per-view outlets and, for a fee, via the Triller app.
For the last few months, after announcing his return following more than 15 years of retirement, Tyson has been seen going through dynamic and intense training and preparations.
In an Instagram video shared by a fight promoter and matchmaker Dean Toole, both parties of the upcoming bout were seen signing their contracts and confirming the deal.
As Mr. Toole, who is the CEO of Island Fights, said in an interview with Sportsmail, “Roy will fight anybody, anywhere.”
“If someone calls Roy out in his career it’s a done deal, he could be 80-years-old – if someone mentions his name, he’s fighting them,” he said.
According to Toole, the bout between the two heavyweight champions has been sealed months ago when Roy called him and sent him a video of him and Tyson via Zoom.
“Roy called me about 11.30 at night about a month and a half, two months ago, and told me he’d got the fight, he was fighting Tyson and he sent me a video of them on Zoom – both signing their contracts,” he added.
As Yahoo Sports reported, the legendary bout will take place at Carson’s Dignity Health Sports Park in California. Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the fighters will be using gloves of a larger size than usual.
“This isn’t a situation where they’re going out there to try to take each other’s heads off. They’re just going to be in there moving around the ring and letting fans see these legends,” Andy Foster of the California State Athletic Commission confirmed.
While Tyson’s career consists of 50 wins, and 44 wins by KO, out of a total of 58 fights, Jones Jr.’s record involves 66 wins, and 47 wins by KO, out of a total of 75 fights.
