Like many crafty people, Annabel loves to find cute and creative solutions to problems in her home.
Her bedroom in the UK was fitted with shutters, but this meant she had to chose between her privacy and letting beautiful natural light flood her space each morning. She had used traditional frosted window film before, but found it boring and also “rather a pain.” That’s when Annabel thought up the most gorgeous and simple alternative — lace!
First, Annabel picked out a lovely, feminine scallop-edge lace. Then, she mixed up the magic “starch jelly” that would act as the perfect adhesive, which is comprised of cornstarch, cold water, and boiling water. In less than an hour, Annabel created the most elegant solution that would bring more privacy to her glass windows. Lucky for us, she documented the DIY project on her blog for all to see.
“This was the quickest, easiest, cheapest project ever but I’m 100 percent in love with the results,” she says. “You know those little upgrades that just make your life both better and prettier? This is one of those for our bedroom.”

First, Annabel painted a thick layer of “starch jelly” onto the window pane.

This jelly is made of two tablespoons of cornstarch with an equal amount of cold water, then a cup and a half of boiling water.
She then cut out a piece of lace in the shape of her window, making sure there were no creases, and fit it to the window pane.

Annabel then applied another thick layer of jelly on top of the lace, and made sure to cover all the corners.

The best thing about using lace is that there are no air pockets — and if there’s a gap, Annabel says you can just cut a small strip and starch-glue it over top.

In less than an hour, Annabel created an elegant way to allow both privacy and sunshine in her beautiful space.

And if she ever wants to remove the lace, all she has to do is wash the windows with warm water.
Cheap, chic, stunning… everything a DIY project should be!
