A 25-year-old truck driver tragically died after rescuing 10 children from a horrific crash.
The school bus was unloading children around 3:30 pm Wednesday when Jonathan Grayer, the truck driver, crashed into the vehicle.
He did his best to save the young pupils before he collapsed and died.
According to WBAL, the truck was moving between 50mph and 60mph when it crashed into the school bus. At least 10 students and the driver were injured.
Cpl. Shane Copeland of the Georgia State Patrol said to CNN: “The impact sent the back of the box truck into the air, leaving metal scattered across the highway.”
Grayer desperately rushed to save the children trapped inside the bus.
The school bus’ surveillance footage shows Grayer removing seats off of students trapped underneath and taking them to safety.
However, he collapsed and was rushed to the Bacon County Hospital where he passed away.
“He must’ve been running on adrenaline, and his body gave out,” Cpl. Shane Copeland said. “He was pretty much done by that point.”
Each of the students sustained injuries, including fractures and broken bones. Three children were rushed to Bacon County Hospital while others were taken to Shands Jacksonville Med Center. Three other children were airlifted to the hospital.
Jerry Sweat, the bus driver, also suffered injuries and received treatment at Bacon County Hospital.
Tyler Beach of Bacon County Fire said: “We’ve had other accidents and tragedies and things like that in the past, but this one… had you shaken the most out of all of them.”
Beach added: “It was actually unbelievable for a population of 11,000 in Bacon County. We couldn’t believe the support and all the resources that were available in a moment’s notice.
“I can’t say thank you enough to everyone who showed up and helped respond.”
