Who can forget Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwarts and the Magical World? Apparently not the Chinese Potterhead fandom, as The Philosopher’s Stone sets a new box office record for the franchise this week at the recently reopened Chinese box office.
The influx of the revenues coming from the remastered version of the 2001 movie is such that the overall accumulative revenue for the first installment of the series is set to exceed 1 billion dollars. The Chinese cinemas are putting their best to attract more audience with 4K remastered movie quality combined with 3-D technology for the better Hogwarts experience. The current earnings are just shy of the expected mark, $997.8 million worldwide – inches away from hitting $1 billion.
The re-release has also made more records other than just pure revenue earning surprise. The first installment of the series, almost nearing its two decades of entrancing adults and kids alike to the Magical World, has achieved a record single-day gross earning.
The Chinese fans, cooped up during the last 3 months of quarantine, was bustling to to the cinemas to quench their cinematic thirst, and the Chinese government’s decisions to reopen the theaters have apparently triggered larger-than-life reactions to the fantasy classic.
This is indeed a rare occurrence, considering that almost all of the rest of the world is suffering huge in regards to their film-making industries.
Starting with the latest James Bond movie, No Time To Die, horror sequel A Quiet Place Part II and the third Ghostbusters film, Ghostbusters: Afterlife have all but decided to commence with their worldwide releases. Movies lesser in size in comparison to these blockbusters have chosen to go to the streaming services.
Christopher Nolan’s recent comeback Tenet is getting a limited release in parts of the world, such as South Korea, later in the year.
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone – known as Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone in regions such as America – is the starter for the legendary 8-film compendium adaptation of Rowling’s books. The prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, is loosely based on Rowling’s special edition of one of Hogwarts’ imaginary textbooks in Studies of Magical Creatures.
The prequel series, currently 2 and one upcoming, alone has garnered $8.5 billion collectively.
