One of the chief organizers of the Black Lives Matter protest that has swept across the nation seemed to defend the looting that took place during the protests, and likened America to terrorists that go and steal from foreign countries.
Hawk Newsome is one of the co-founders of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York. He is widely considered one of the leaders in the anti-racist organization. The controversial statements came during a contentious interview Newsome had with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum.
The question that MacCallum posted to Newsome was to ask him his thoughts on former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s argument that BLM should be designated as a domestic terror organization. Giuliani has gained notoriety for his off-cuff political remarks.
The social activist initially shrugged off the question, saying that Giuliani was referring to ordinary Americans – fathers and mothers who have poured out into the streets to fight for a change.
However, the interview quickly escalated. When the host of “The Story” clarified that Giuliani was referring to the looters who have caused serious damage to the business owners during the protests, Newsome turned to make equivalencies.
Newsome said that no one is going around calling America a terrorist when it goes into foreign countries to take over their oil wells and diamonds. He continued by making the same point, that no American thinks of America as a terrorist group when they attack others.
When MacCallum tried to change the direction of the conversation by asking Newsome’s thoughts on a fellow organizer in Chicago who said that looting was a form of private reparation, Newsome swiftly twisted the topic into white supremacy without directly answering the question.
In an answer that was not related to the question, Newsome pointed out the inherent issues of white supremacy. According to him, the most dangerous aspect of white supremacy was how the oppressed somehow becomes the criminal regardless of the circumstances.
In a long line of what must be described as a non-sequitur, Newsome threw out different buzzwords and talking points that still did not answer the question. He refused to address MacCallum’s question as to whether he personally thinks looting stores are ethical.
