A husband has been left paralyzed as he was shot in front of his wife while the pair was walking to the store in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York City.
The incident happened in broad daylight on Wednesday as 33-year-old Sam Metcalfe was walking to a store together with his wife Sabrina to get toothpaste.
When at the intersection of Woodruff and Ocean avenues, at around 3.30 in the afternoon, an unidentified shooter passed by in a BMW SUV and opened fire.
According to the reports, the shooter’s target was most likely 18-year-old Malcolm Amede, a suspected gang member, who got fatally shot at the time of the incident.
One stray bullet also managed to strike Metcalfe and render him paralyzed after lodging in his spine. While the young man survived the shooting, he has been left paralyzed and in a battle for his life.
Following the shooting, Krysta Zagorski started a GoFundMe page to help raise funds that the couple needs to get through the ordeal and associated medical bills.
“On Wednesday, August 19, 2020, Sabrina and her husband Sam left their Brooklyn apartment to go to the store and get some toothpaste,” the GoFundMe page named ‘Saving Sam’ reads.
“She told him he didn’t need to come but he wanted to hold the umbrella for her because it was raining and the umbrella was broken. While crossing an intersection less than five minutes from their building, shots rang out and Sam was hit.”
As the fundraiser goes on to explain, “Sam couldn’t feel his legs” almost immediately after getting shot.
“We now know that the bullet hit his kidney and stopped when it hit his spine. They removed his kidney but his condition is too fragile to attempt to remove the bullet just yet. Doctors are still trying to stop the bleeding and Sam will likely never walk again,” Zagorski added.
As Sam continues fighting for his life with his wife by his side, the organizer of the fundraiser has asked people for help in raising money to support the couple during these tough times.
The tragic shooting follows as crime continues to spiral out of control in The Big Apple.
According to the reports, at least five people got shot at the same intersection as Sam in the last ten days alone, whereas 11 shootings were reported in NYC on Thursday.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the five boroughs experienced an 84.6% rise in victims of shooting during the period of January to August as compared to the same time last year.
