A 46-year-old woman has passed away during a butt lift surgery in Miami.
Gia Romualdo-Rodriguez reportedly died from an embolism after fat was injected into her buttocks at the Xiluet clinic.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office ruled her death accidental.
Romualdo-Rodriguez is one of the people who passed away due to dangerous surgery as many individuals risk their own lives to get their idea of the perfect body.
According to reports, the 46-year-old traveled from New York to Miami for the surgery at the clinic known for Brazilian butt lifts, tummy tucks, and breast enhancements.
Romualdo-Rodriguez, who also underwent breast-enhancement surgery operated on by Dr. Stephanie Stover, was transitioning to be a woman.
Dr. Stover is certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
But according to The Miami Herald, Romualdo-Rodriguez’s heart rate and oxygen levels dropped. The doctor immediately called 911 and she was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Her friend, Liz Chavez, said to The Herald: “She had always felt like a girl, from an early age. She struggled a lot with discrimination from her family that didn’t want to accept it. For people in Mexico, it’s really hard to be transgender.”
Chavez also said that her friend was popular in the transgender community in NYC. She worked with community groups including Colectivo Intercultural Transgrediendo and Make the Road New York.
According to the Herald, at least 20 deaths have been linked to complications from butt lift surgery in Florida alone in the past decade.
The surgery involves fat being taken from the patient’s stomach and transferred into the butt.
