Residents of a village in Romania have re-elected their deceased mayor who had passed away just two weeks before the elections took place.
As reported by the local media, the people of Deveselu insisted the beloved mayor deserved to be re-elected even though he had passed away from COVID-19 complications two weeks prior to the elections.
According to the officials, it was already too late for Mayor Ion Aliman’s name to be removed because the voting ballots had already been printed.
Following the voting, it was revealed that Aliman was re-elected with 64% of the vote, whereas residents claimed he deserved another victory for doing a good job leading the village populated by some three thousand people.
“He was a real mayor to us. He took the side of the village, respected all the laws. I don’t think we will see a mayor like him again,” one local said in an interview with ProTV.
After the voting had come to an end, villagers gathered around Aliman’s grave and lit candles in support of the deceased 56-year-old.
“It is your victory. Know that you will be proud of us. Rest in peace,” one local was heard saying as dozens of villagers visited the mayor’s grave.
After Aliman’s posthumous victory, the officials have confirmed that a new election will soon take place.
