An elderly man has 20 wriggling worms pulled out from his eye.
A shocking video shows the parasites squirming in a bowl after they were pulled from a Chinese man’s eye.
It is believed that the worms have lived inside Mr. Wan’s eye for a year before he decided to seek medical attention.
Medics believe that the elderly man, who enjoyed exercising outdoors, had been bitted by flies carrying parasitic larvae.
The perturbing incident was only discovered when Mr. Wan finally went to the Suzhou Municipal Hospital and told doctors that he felt something got stuck in his eye a year ago.
However, the elderly man dismissed the issue and only went to a doctor when his eye’s condition worsened.
While checking his eyes, doctors found that he had been infected with almost 20 live worms.
In the video obtained by Suzhou Daily News, a doctor can be seen removing a white worm from Mr. Wan’s eye before dropping it into a small container.
The parasites belong to a species called ‘thelazia callipaeda.’ It is the most common cause of ‘eyeworm infestation’ or thelaziasis.
These worms are usually found in cats and dogs but can be transmitted to a person when someone is exposed to infected insects that feed on secretions of the eye.
Dr. Xi Ting said to local media that the patient had been bitten by insects while he was exercising outdoors. He is believed to be recovering now after the procedure.
