A bride has been slammed on the internet after revealing she kicked her own sister from her wedding party because she gained weight.
As the unnamed bride-to-be in question revealed, she asked her older sister to step down from her position as her bridesmaid and dumped her from her bridal party after finding out she had put on extra weight – more than 20 pounds to be precise – during the lockdown.
Taking her story to Reddit in an attempt to justify her actions, the bride claimed the decision was for the good of her sister who allegedly has a history of bad eating habits.
“My sister Julia was overweight growing up while the rest of us (five girls, no brothers) were always petite,” the bride, who was branded self-centered by the netizens, wrote in her post.
“No one in our family ever treated her badly for her weight, though my mum did try to help her diet several times throughout our childhood for purely health reasons.”
As the bride added, her sister was “in and out” of her treatment ever since she was hospitalized back when she was 18 years old.
“I was hopeful she could keep it together and felt okay about asking her to be a bridesmaid at that point,” the bride added.
10 months later, following the pandemic-based lockdown, however, the bride was shocked to see that her sister had put on 10 kilograms ahead of her wedding. As she added, she then asked her sister not to be her bridesmaid in order to let her “wear whatever she wants” without putting the celebration at risk.
“I kindly asked her to step down from being a bridesmaid, explaining that it was for her own good and I was only doing this because I cared about her,” the bride wrote.
While Julia agreed, she was reportedly left feeling “heartbroken,” whereas the girls’ father was “furious” because of the bride’s request.
According to the bride, her sisters and her mother supported her decision. While she initially also felt she did the right thing, she was left in doubt after her own fiancé slammed her for ridiculing her sister because of her weight.
After the bride’s post went viral, people were left divided whereas some were quick to accuse the bride of being “self-centered” while others suggested she might have had good intentions but went about it the wrong way.
“With family like this, it’s no wonder [she] has an eating disorder,” one person wrote.
“The obsession over the wedding pictures is disgusting. Why does a wedding have to be an Instagram event?” another one suggested.
One person said: “Bride sounds so self-centered. Thank god the fiancé talked some sense into her.”
Some people, however, appeared to rush to the bride’s aid.
“Maybe she went about it the wrong way, but her feelings are valid. Also what girl doesn’t dream a perfect wedding day, it’s natural to overthink all the variables that play into it,” one Redditor wrote.
