Nicki Minaj’s father, Robert Maraj, has been killed in a hit-and-run on Friday, Nassau County Police in New York confirmed to TMZ.
According to authorities, the 64-year-old was walking in Mineola at around 6 pm when he was hit by a car going northbound on Roslyn Road.
Investigators have asked the public’s help in finding the driver who immediately fled the scene.
Mr. Maraj was rushed to a hospital where he passed away.
The devastating news comes only four months after Minaj, 38, welcomed her first child with Kenneth Petty.
Minaj was born in Trinidad but was raised in New York City. Her parents moved to the US when she was 5 and raised the future rapper in Queens.
The Super Bass hitmaker has spoken about her father on many different occasions, sharing pictures of them on Instagram.
Minaj has revealed the domestic violence in their home when she was young, including how her father would use cocaine and the moment he attempted to burn their house down.
“No. he was just abusive,” Minaj said in a 2015 interview with the New York Times. “I would always hear him yelling and cursing, always. And it made me feel it was the way to interact, because that’s how I saw him interacting.”
Minaj also told Details magazine about how her father allegedly abused her mother, Carol.
In a 2010 interview, she said: “He drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother.
“She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind — because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought: ‘If I’m successful, I can change her life.’”
It is not clear what terms the rapper was on with her father when he tragically died.
