A high school student was sent home from school after her teachers said they felt ‘uncomfortable’ with her outfit.
17-year-old Karis Wilson from Canada was pulled out from her class at NorKam Senior Secondary School in British Columbia, because of her outfit – knee-length lace-trimmed dress over a white long-sleeved turtle neck.
Her furious father, Christopher Wilson, shared a video of the incident on Facebook where it has been viewed over 77,000 times and gained more than 740 comments and 1,300 reactions.
Mr. Wilson from Canada said that the incident was ‘absurd’ and described the outfit as ‘very modest.’
“Today my daughter was sent home for wearing clothing that made her female teacher and her male Student teacher “feel uncomfortable”,’ he wrote on Facebook.
“Centered out in front of her class and told she needs to leave class and brought her to the VP’s before she went home in tears. After asking her how she would like me to handle it she said she wanted to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen to the students that come after her.”
Mr. Wilson added: “Please stand with Karis and I and make sure that those involved are held accountable and that this never happens again.”
His post triggered widespread outrage on Facebook, with one person writing: “So, the female teacher perpetuated rape culture, shamed a young woman? And committed an act of lateral violence against this child.”
Another commented: “A female’s education is far more important than how she is dressed! If somebody else’s choice of clothing makes you uncomfortable then that is entirely on you!”
In an interview with CBS News, Mr. Wilson said: “(Karis) was told that it could possibly make the male student teacher feel awkward and it could make (her female classroom teacher) feel awkward since it reminded her of a lingerie outfit.
“It’s actually a very modest outfit when you actually look at it… I think the initial comments were based on the fact that it had lace.”
He added: “There was a female who was singled out because what she’s wearing could make someone in a position of power over her feel uncomfortable. And the more you think of it, the more you say it, the more you understand that this is absurd.”
