Joe Cougill, 69, and Donna Horn 70, finally tied the knot more than 50 years after their parents tore them apart.
The high school sweethearts exchanged their vows after the biological daughter they had put up for adoption managed to bring them back together.
In an interview with the Indianapolis Star, Joe said: “We were first loves. She was all I wanted, and I was all she wanted.”
Joe was a freshman star athlete and Donna was a sophomore cheerleader when they first met at Franklin Central High School.
But when Donna found out that she was expecting, their two-year relationship started to collapse as their fathers decided to take charge.
Joe’s father said he would do whatever Donna’s dad wished, including have his son marry the teen. However, Donna’s father did not want Joe to see his daughter ever again.
Joe had no idea what had happened to the love of his life and their child. He played football at Indiana and went on to teach high school and own a sunglasses company.
The father-of-two married and divorced twice. He was single in 2019.
Donna obtained her high school diploma and worked at the Fort Benjamin finance center. The mother-of-three and breast cancer survivor also tied the knot twice but her second husband died from cancer in 2011. She was single in 2019.
Unbeknownst to them, their daughter Laura received a 23andMe DNA and genetic testing kit from her husband.
Laura brought her biological parents back together after more than fifty years of keeping their vows to their parents.
She said that she did not plan on reuniting them but she just wanted to know if it was love that brought her to this world.
“We saw each other and we hugged each other and we cried,” Joe expressed. “We knew. We knew. You know what I mean?”
Joe and Donna fell in love all over again and they finally tied the knot last May.
