President Biden ripped into racism and called it “the ugly poison that has long haunted our nation” in an apparent jab at Donald Trump.
For months, the former president has been referring to coronavirus and the pandemic using the term China virus. Just last week, he once again managed to upset a huge chunk of the nation as he made the ‘racist’ remark while taking credit for the swift Covid-19 vaccination program.
“I hope everyone remembers when they’re getting the COVID-19 (often referred to as the China virus) vaccine, that if I wasn’t president, you wouldn’t be getting that beautiful ‘shot’ for five years, at best, and probably wouldn’t be getting it at all,” Trump wrote last week.
Now, President Biden seemingly went after Trump and his comments by saying: “Words have consequences. It’s the coronavirus. Full stop.”
Biden’s warning was issued shortly after his Atlanta meeting with the Asian-American community members on Friday, three days after the spa shootings that rocked the country.
During his speech, the president called out “the ugly poison” of racism and insisted that it “has long haunted and plagued our nation.”
In an apparent jab at Trump, VP Kamala Harris also claimed that “people with the biggest bully pulpits” are the ones who are “spreading this kind of hate” before introducing Biden to the minority community leaders.
On Wednesday, one day after the spa shootings, Biden insisted he wasn’t going to draw connections between the victims’ race and the shooter’s motives until the investigation is complete. However, he pointed out that a surge in hate crimes against Asian-Americans is “very troubling.”
“I know that Asian-Americans are very, very concerned because, as you know, I was speaking about the brutality against Asian-American for the last couple months. And I think it is very, very troubling,” he said.
“But I’m making no connection at this moment. The motivation of the killer. I’m waiting for an answer, as the investigation proceeds, from the FBI and from the Justice Department. I’ll have more to say when the investigation has completed.”
