SpongeBob SquarePants has become the newest target of cancel culture as Nickelodeon pulled the plug on two episodes over their ‘insensitive’ content.
The decision to permanently remove two episodes comes amid a wave of attacks on stereotypes and depictions that are deemed problematic by some and follows shortly after Pepe Le Pew was cut from Space Jam: A New Legacy and after six titles of Dr. Seuss got canceled by the publisher.
The two SpongeBob episodes that Nickelodeon decided to remove permanently include the Kwarantined Krab from Season 12 and the Mid-Life Crustacean from Season 3.
In the Kwarantined Krab, several main characters get thrown in a quarantine freezer after Clam Flu sweeps over Bikini Bottom’s Krusty Krab. As a spokesperson for Nickelodeon confirmed in an interview with CNN, this episode was canceled “due to sensitivities surrounding the global, real-world pandemic.”
In the controversial episode, a series of main characters get quarantined at Krusty Krab while health inspectors try to find out who has the mysterious disease.
Another episode that has seen the end of its days is Season 3’s Mid-Life Crustacean. In this episode, Mr. Krabs, who is going through a mid-life crisis, joins SpongeBob and Patrick for a night out.
Amid their shenanigans, the trio breaks into the house of a female crab, who later turns out to be the mother of Mr. Krabs, and steals her underwear.
“We determined some story elements were not kid-appropriate,” Nickelodeon concluded.
As reported by IGN, the two episodes are no longer available for streaming on Paramount+. They can also no longer be bought in a digital form on services like Amazon.
