Recently, a cleaner from Greenock, Inverclyde suffering from Down syndrome who was fired from work at the Waterfront Leisure Centre was given his job back after a public protest.
The leisure center told 47-year-old Ronnie Hawthorn that the management could no longer pay for his £30-a-week pay, however, if he is willing to work, he can continue as an unpaid volunteer.
Moreover, he was also told that he is always welcomed to the night outs with the team. But the upper management at the leisure center has apologized to Ronnie and has offered to give him his position back.
Kieron Vango, Inverclyde Leisure Chief Executive has said that Mr. Hawthorn is a well thought and respected employee at Waterfront Leisure Centre. He added that Ronnie prides himself on his role as a cleaner and productively does his job.
He said that the whole management apologies to Ronnie and his family for the confusion about Ronnie being sacked from his job position.
It was found out that Ronnie along with other cleaning staff was offered a position but Ronnie was keen to stay on the poolside and work the same shift.
But the management has sorted things out and is glad to announce that Ronnie will be working at the leisure center in a paid role.
Ronnie has been working as a cleaning staff at the Waterfront Leisure Centre for the past 17 years, worked eight hours a week but only gets paid for 3.7 hours of work. The rest of the hours he spent at the center providing his services were all voluntary.
Ronnie’s father said that his son loves being around people and loves to work alongside his colleagues.
