A teacher has been facing an investigation after telling her students that George Floyd would still be alive if he complied with the police.
In a troubling 15-minute video shared by one of the students’ parents on YouTube, an Alaskan teacher known as Ms. Gardner was heard discussing policing with her students.
As the Lathrop High School teacher insisted, George Floyd would still be alive today if he complied with the police and stopped resisting when they tried to arrest him.
“If George Floyd had at the beginning when they got him out of the car and went to put him in the police car, if he had just sidled into the car and slid in there and let them put his legs in, he would be alive today,” Gardner told the students.
Earlier in the conversation, the teacher also suggested that people should always comply with police orders even if they are being arrested unfairly.
“I’m an old white lady and if the cops came up to me and said ma’am, put your hands behind your back, you’re going to jail, I’m putting my hands behind my back,” she said even though she acknowledged that there “needs to be some … training” for the police.
During her lesson, Gardner also told her students they would do just fine during an encounter with the police because they “don’t look like thugs” and know how to “dress nicely.”
After the controversial comments went viral on social media, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District notified parents that an investigation is ongoing and that Gardner has been placed on leave.
