A 14-year-old has been arrested after a body of a six-year-old girl was found in the woods near her Indiana home.
Reports say that the girl’s body was found only two hours after she was reported missing by her family. A preliminary autopsy revealed that she died of asphyxiation.
The horrific details about Grace’s final hours were revealed as the teenager got arrested.
The 14-year-old, who hasn’t been named because of his age, remained in custody at a juvenile facility. He is scheduled to appear in court on March 22.
Grace’s family reported her missing at 6:30 pm on Friday. At 8: 25 pm, officers found her lifeless body in a wooded area near their home in Chapman Street.
The teen was then arrested and taken into custody.
St. Joseph County Second District Commissioner Derek Dieter told ABC 57 that officers are still investigating the incident but said that the details are ‘very horrific.’
“Very horrific with how this laid out,” he expressed. “The details of what I’ve known about so far, but any time there’s violence and it affects children especially it’s always a little more intense.”
A judge ordered the boy to remain in custody as St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office reviews the preliminary inquiry.
Grace’s funeral will be held in the Guisinger Chapel at the Palmer Funeral Home where her family and friends can visit her.
Her heartbroken aunt, Nicole Ross, told ABC 57: “The amount of people that I’ve never met or talked to that have reached out via social media via text it’s been amazing I guess but I kind of wish it wasn’t like this.”
Ross also set up a fundraiser on Facebook for Grace’s funeral expenses, writing: “My darling 6 year old niece Grace Ross passed away yesterday. She is now an angel in heaven. I’m raising money to help her parents with her funeral expenses.”
