Justin Bieber, 27, a Canadian singer was criticized for his choice of hairstyle that claims cultural appropriation.
Last month, Bieber triggered criticism when he showed off his dreadlocks on Instagram, with critics urging him to “educate himself” on black culture.
The singer showed off his dreadlocks on a photo of his vacation with Hailey: “Hailey made me get corn rows like an absolute douche bag, these will be off tomorrow trust me, Danny.”
In Rastafarianism, dreadlocks are a spiritual symbol, and when the likes of Bieber take on this kind of style, many argue that it is a form of cultural appropriation.
The Canadian pop star was condemned when he last had the hairstyle, but obviously, he wasn’t put off getting dreads one again last month.
After weeks of backlash, Bieber then posted a photo of him with his wife Hailey Bieber, 24, but this time, his dreadlocks were gone.
Bieber’s new hair was closely shaved to his scalp in the photo taken while the couple was having lunch.
The singer simply captioned the photo: “Happy Sunday.”
He also shared another photo of him on Instagram in a black and white close-up selfie shot sharing his new look with his fans.
While many of his fans liked his looks, some pointed out that his dreads could cause trouble.
“It’s really disappointing to see you with dreads,” one user wrote. “I thought you educated yourself.”
“Justin baby, what in the world,” another one commented. “No sir.”
“Didn’t you say you were educating yourself about black culture so what is this foolery?” someone added.
Justin was also accused of appropriating black culture in 2016 when he had cornrows.
Other people argue that the hairstyle can be traced to ancient civilizations across the globe and that identifying the above examples as cultural appropriation is reductive.
