A woman was found dead after slipping off a waterfall and plunging hundreds of feet to her death.
The tragic accident occurred in Far North Queensland where a 58-year-old woman from Cairns was enjoying a Sunday hike together with her friends.
According to the reports, the group visited Windin Falls, an impressively high waterfall that features an infinity pool at its top.
While on top of the natural wonder, the woman reportedly slipped and fell from the infinity pool that is famous among thrill-seekers.
As of this writing, the details surrounding the woman’s fall remain unclear, and the authorities have yet to confirm whether the woman was swimming at the time of the accident or attempting to take a photo at the edge of the waterfall.
Following the tragic fall, it took the emergency responders, who were equipped with drones and a rescue helicopter, several hours to locate the body of the 58-year-old.
“We activated members from our Atherton and Malanda crews and actually took an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) in through the walking track that leads to Windin Falls,” Peter Rinaudo of the State Emergency Service said.
“Unfortunately by the time we got there, it was determined that there was nothing that we could do to assist.”
Though the waterfall remains a popular tourist attraction, Rinaudo has warned of the dangers associated with visiting Windin Falls.
“There’s a couple of small pools that come from a nearby creek that then plummet straight over the side of a cliff face. So if you are in the water in the creek it’s just like an infinity pool and you can look down the gorges down towards Palmerston National Park,” he added.
“It’s a very, very pretty place but one that can at times be quite dangerous as well.”
Our thoughts are with the deceased woman’s family and friends. May she rest in peace.
