Recently, actress Jennifer Lawrence who has starred in the series “The Hunger Games,” has been accused a “radical wing” of the Republican Party of “cheating” by pushing for stricter voting rules.
She addresses the situation in a Youtube PSA for the non-profit organization, RepresentUs.
She is a part of the board of directors for RepresentUs, and its website states that their goal is to “bring together conservatives and progressives to pass laws to fix our broken elections”. Another goal of theirs is to “end political corruption, extremism, and gridlock”.
She starts off with, “Whatever your personal politics are, whatever side of the aisle you find yourself on, you need to know that your vote matters and the outcome of our elections are not maneuvered and manipulated”. She applies this to the video that she has uploaded from their organization’s Youtube channel.
Lawrence brings up examples of the so-called “cheating”, that in “Texas, Georgia, Florida, and 44 other states, there’s a radical wing of the Republican party that is actively dismantling America’s right to vote because they don’t have the numbers to win otherwise.”
The actress continues, “without gerrymandering or shutting down hundreds of voting facilities within reach of minorities, and specifically targeting and carving out people of color, they can’t win. But this is cheating and it is not democracy.”
She emphasizes that the non-profit organization that she is a part of is fighting on behalf for the act, For the People Act. The act’s intention is to “expand voting rights, change campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of money in politics, limit partisan gerrymandering, and create new ethics rules for federal officeholders”.
The website also iterates that “House Democrats are committed to advancing HR1 – a transformational anti-corruption and clean elections reform package – in the 117th Congress.” They would clean up the corruption occurring in Washington in order to empower the American people and their rights to vote properly.
In order to emphasize her point, she has had overwhelming support that could lead to the largest overhaul of the US election law. There would be changes that require states to automatically register voters while offering same-day voter registration.
She brings up a law in the Senate that can reverse the anti-voting laws, stopping billionaires from buying the elections in the future if it ever leads to it.
