Vice President Kamala Harris has decided that she will visit the border located in between Texas and Mexico.
This will be her first time as vice president while visiting the border.
Before her decision, Harris had been under fire for not being able to visit, albeit her Latin America trip she had just wrapped up recently. The Republican party, the opposing party of her own, had been criticizing at how the Biden administration was lacking in terms of keeping the migrant surge under control. The situation at the border had been covered by news sources and it was apparent that there was a lack of presence from both the president and vice president.
The migrant situation were being held in facilities, separated from their families and under the care of the Biden administration to the best of their abilities.
Harris’ press secretary had publicly announced the trip in a statement last Wednesday. She will be accompanied by Alejandro Mayorkas, the Homeland Security Secretary, while she makes her way to the US-Mexico border.
According to the statement, “Vice President Harris will travel to El Paso, Texas, on Friday, June 25.
She will be accompanied by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Earlier this year, the President asked the Vice President to oversee our diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
As a part of this ongoing work, the Vice President traveled to Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month and will travel to El Paso on Friday”.
She will be visiting the border after being in Guatemala and Mexico for a few days. Her goal was to give support to the countries in order to address the situation at hand. They also worked on problems that were seen as “necessary” in order to alleviate the root causes of the migration situation.
Harris has been defensive about being absent at the border, saying that she has not completed her agenda and hasn’t even “been to Europe”.
She “cares about what’s happening at the border… dealing with the root causes of migration [in Guatemala]”. Due to her actions, people think she is turning a blind eye but she comments that “it is my firm belief that if we care about what’s happening at the border, we better care about the root causes and address them.
And so that’s what I’m doing”.
