Representative Maxine Waters was in no mood of celebrating July 4th this year as she had plenty to say about America’s founding document.
The Rep dragged the Declaration of Independence into her bold remarks which were released via her Twitter account on the fourth of July. Moreover, Waters raised plenty of eyebrows when she referred to the historic founding document as solely for ‘white people’.
In the appalling Tweet, the congresswoman from California mentioned how the Declaration of Independence claims that all men are made equal. However, that was when she went about questioning, ‘Equal to what?’ ‘What men?’ ‘Only to white men?’
In the same way, she added how this was definitely something concerning as it was something written in the year 1776 and that was when African Americans had been enslaved. “They certainly were not thinking about all of us then, but we are thinking about us now!”
Waters added how the American nation was far from being a place with equality and how it was very evident that voter suppression ruled in the law when it came to numerous election security laws in a number of different states.
“Need I say more,” she added while shedding light on various incidents of police brutality that managed to take place in the recent past too. Clearly, her 4th of July rant wasn’t the only thing trending on Twitter as she wasn’t the only member of Congress to speak on the issue.
Representative Cori Bush also tweeted about a similar opinion, where she went about mentioning how all of the freedoms that came with the celebrations on the 4th of July were solely restricted for White men only.
“This land is an example of stolen land. Also, Black people still are not free today,” Bush added boldly.
What are your thoughts on the Congresswomen’s stance regarding the Declaration of Independence? Do you agree?
