An outraged mother complained about being forced to pay a fine after her young son peed while playing at a play center.
As a Brisbane-based mom explained in her one-star review of Cream House Café, she had been taking her two-and-a-half-year-old son to the play center weekly so that he could enjoy the music class and have fun at the playhouse.
Problems began, however, when the little boy wet the playhouse, prompting the play center staff to fine the mom $50 for the accident.
“My two-and-a-half-year-old son accidentally wet the playhouse. He went to play on the slide and accidentally urinated,” she wrote.
“I did not try to hide it or run away as soon my son told me he had accident. I cleaned all the places where he urinated (he told me where it was). He is doing toilet training and does not wear nappy. I did took him to toilet about 10 mins before this happen.”
After cleaning up the urine, the mother was told she would have to pay a fine because the staff discovered pee “everywhere in the ball pit.”
Though the mother agreed to pay the fine, she was shocked to find out that the incident cost her $50 after checking the receipt at home. As she reportedly explained, she thought she would only be charged $15 after mishearing the staff due to the noise at the play center.
That’s when the angry mom decided to call the play center and demand that they send her their policy.
“They sent me the playhouse rules but nothing stated the fine and how much I needed to pay for such accident,” she added in her review.
“If there are terms or condition at the entrance or wall to state the entry condition, I am happy to pay for the fine. We have been attending the music class for two terms over 20 weeks, I have never ever seen a policy for a customer to pay a fine. I was never made aware of it.”
Though some people ran to the mother’s defense after her review went viral, others suggested the play center was in the right because urine clean-ups are expensive and because her child wasn’t properly potty-trained.
Speaking out was also Rachel, the owner of the Cream House Premium Café, who claimed that this wasn’t the first time the woman’s son had peed at their play center.
“The cost of commercial cleaning is $130. It’s not an easy job that we can do because we need to arrange for the public area to be sanitized. We are a cafe, I need to think about all the kids who visit here,” the owner said in an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
“Her son has peed three times in other parts of our cafe before. The first two times we just quietly cleaned it up because it was on the floor so it was easy but the third time, he peed everywhere in the ball pit.
“I didn’t pee in the ball pit but I have to pay for commercial cleaning. It’s a huge job that cost us $130. As a small business owner and a mum, every $1 we make is important to us. I know it’s hard being a mum but I need to take responsibility for the other families.”
As Rachel insisted, they don’t normally charge parents for such incidents unless absolutely necessary. According to the play center’s owner, they only slapped one other family with the same fine after a child vomited at the play center.
“The parents were apologetic, they came over to tell us straight away. When we told them about the cleaning fee, they were happy to pay it – no drama,” she said of the other incident.
