A woman who became violently sick woke up from an induced coma only to discover that she had given birth to a baby boy.
When Kelsie Routs was diagnosed with Covid while she was 28 weeks pregnant, she became worried not only for herself but also for her unborn child.
She was rushed to a hospital with breathing problems after contracting the infection and was put on a ventilator.
Doctors determined that the mother needed to be induced into a coma to allow her body to recover.
Baby Kobe was born 12 weeks early via emergency cesarean section, weighing 3lb 11 oz.
One week later, Kelsie woke up and met her baby boy. She described the whole thing as “amazing.”
Speaking to The Sun, the mother-of-three said: “To wake up from a coma and have a newborn baby — it’s just too much to get your head around.
“I know the doctors had to do it to protect the baby, but shock doesn’t really cover it.”
She continued: “Obviously, we are all so, so happy. We’ve gone from such an awful low to being back together as a family with our new baby.”
Kelsie said that it was like a “miracle” that the medics had managed to take care of both of them.
Looking back, she said that it is not worth thinking about what could’ve happened. The mom-of-three was just happy to return home with her family.
Her partner, 23-year-old Danny, echoed her words and said it was “mad” the way the situation had unfolded.
“To go into a coma and then wake up and have a baby, it’s the stuff of miracles,” he expressed.
