Megyn Kelly, an American journalist and lawyer who was a news anchor at Fox News, is slamming HBO Max for temporarily taking down the classic movie Gone with the Wind, the 1939 film that tells the story of an epic romance during the American civil war.
The former talk show host and correspondent with NBC News took to Twitter and wrote: “Are we going to pull all of the movies in which women are treated as sex objects too? Guess how many films we’ll have left? Where does this end?”
Kelly also argued that if streaming sites and movie giants start to take down controversial movies and shows, hits like Game of Thrones, Law and Order, and Friends must also be canceled.
“Ok @hbomax – let’s do this – every episode of “Friends” needs to go right now. If not, you hate women (& LGBTQ ppl), who also don’t fare well on “Friends”. Obviously Game of Thrones has to go right now. Anything by John Hughes…Woody Allen…could go on & on & on & on…” she wrote.
HBO announced on Tuesday that they had to remove the 1939 film as it shows the horrors of slavery.
The movie starred Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. It is based on a novel written by Margaret Mitchell.
Kelly denounced HBO Max’s move to temporarily remove the movie saying it would only start a domino effect and result in the removal of other hit films and shows.
One Twitter user replied to her post: “We can say goodbye to Tarantino or Scorsese movies,” to which she replied: “Totally. Forgot those guys. Let’s keep it going until all we have left is The Queen and Captain America.”
The journalist also said that art, music and books do not need to be censured even if they portray controversial views of sex, race and bias.
Kelly said: “For the record, you can loathe bad cops, racism, sexism, bias against the LGBTQ community, and not censor historical movies, books, music and art that don’t portray those groups perfectly. Ppl understand art reflects life… as we evolve, so do our cultural touchstones.”
