The father of a 9-year-old girl who wrote heartbreaking
letters with code words to her dad to let him know she felt unsafe with her mother’s fiancé has won custody of his daughter.
Sophie from Texas was also seen begging for help in a video shared online, sparking the campaign #StandWithSophie on social media.
In the video, she was heard accusing her mother’s fiancé of sexually abusing her while she was being pulled out of her dad’s car during a custody exchange.
After the video went viral, a judge awarded full custody of Sophie and her two younger brothers to their dad Michael.
His attorney, Jamie Graham, said to Heavy that they are happy with the decision.
Michael and his wife Kourtney told Daily Mail that they couldn’t sleep when Sophie was with her mother for fear of what could’ve happened to the child.
They also said that they were worried about what might happen to the three children and cannot comprehend why the kids were being made to endure such situations.
“It’s really, really hard. There’s a lot of guilt – you try to think if there was a sign you could have seen sooner, if they were trying to tell you in some other way,” Kourtney expressed.
“It felt just awful [to hear what she said] and you feel disgusted all the time, especially with everybody telling you right and left that it shouldn’t be this hard to remove a child from an abusive situation.
“I just don’t understand why everybody just keeps throwing them back to the wolves.”
The stepmom said that when Sophie arrived to spend a summer vacation with them, the girl felt pains in her private area.
They took Sophie to a clinic where she was diagnosed with an infection. She eventually told Kourtney that she had been sexually abused by her mother’s fiancé and his friends.
“They completely took her innocence away. But they didn’t take her power away and they didn’t take her will,” Michael said.
“In terms of how I feel towards them, I hope they pay for what they’ve done. I don’t believe in violence, I don’t believe in death threats but justice needs to be served.
“At this point, there’s so much evidence, if justice isn’t served, it tells me the system is completely collapsed and there is no justice for children in the United States.”
