A young man has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing after jumping out of a moving plane and locking himself in a fire station.
30-year-old Daniel Ramirez reportedly jumped out of a Southwest Airlines plane after the aircraft arrived from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and landed at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona.
According to the reports, Ramirez hurled himself through the galley door before running off and locking himself in a nearby fire station.
Following the incident, it has come to light that the man is facing two counts of trespassing.
Meanwhile, his family revealed that Ramirez is a good man who might be suffering from schizophrenia given his unusual behavior and the fact that the condition runs in the family.
As Theresa Padilla, Daniel’s mother, revealed in an interview with KNXV, her son ran away and locked himself in the station because he was convinced that someone was following him and trying to hurt him.
“I don’t want him to be portrayed as some oh… some crazy guy that jumped out off the plane,” Padilla said.
“You know. I mean, he was running and hiding because he thought somebody was after him.”
As Ramirez’s family added, the 30-year-old was staying in Colorado for a job. Suddenly, however, he called them and told them he wants to return home because he was concerned about being followed.
“We were on the phone with him for seven hours. He was paranoid saying ‘someone’s going to get me. Someone’s going to kill me,’” sister-in-law Emily Luevano added.
Recalling the incident, fire Capt. Todd Keller revealed that they were able to get Ramirez out of the station without major problems.
“After a few minutes, firefighters were able to get the adult male to unlock the door where he was then evaluated, treated and transported to a local hospital for a lower extremity injury,” he said.
As of this writing, the case and the man’s allegations remain under investigation.
