A woman pleaded guilty to stealing her daughter’s identity and applying for IDs and loans in her name.
48-year-old Laura Oglesby pleaded guilty to fraud after it was discovered that she had been pretending to be her estranged daughter, then-22-year-old Lauren Ashleigh Hays, for two years since 2016 after the two stopped living together and lost all contact.
It has since come to light that Oglesby enrolled in a university in her daughter’s name. She allegedly also used her daughter’s identity to obtain a driver’s license, a Social Security card, and secure student loans in her name.
After committing Social Security fraud and embezzling over $25,000 worth of funds, the mother is facing up to five years in jail.
As the authorities have revealed, the Oglesby managed to deceive everyone, including her boyfriends, for two years by dressing and acting like she was in her early 20s.
“Everyone believed it. She even had boyfriends that believed that she was that age: 22 years old,” Mountain View Police Department Chief Jamie Perkins told The New York Times.
He added: “She actually was employed here [at the city library], which was kind of off. And that’s how we figured out who she was.”
As the police chief added, Oglesby admitted to stealing her daughter’s identity after she was confronted with evidence during a traffic stop.
“She was just running because she was in a domestic violence relationship, and she’d been running for years,” Perkins said as he recalled the woman had told the police.
“We don’t know her life story outside of what she told us, but we know what happened here. She had lived that life for a couple of years and basically just ruined her daughter’s credit.”
