Martha Andersen received one of the biggest gifts of all as a child and that came in the form of a heart donation.
While the new heart may have given her a new life and wonderful childhood, 16 years later, she is in dire need of a new donor as her heart is failing.
Martha is termed to be one of the 200 kids on a waiting list to get a lifesaving organ and since time is of the essence here, every second counts.
The only problem now is how a suitable donor will be more difficult to find as her body is more likely to reject another transplant.
The 16-year-old teen’s mother named Gill who hails from Consett in County Durham revealed, “You wonder, can we really be that lucky again? My daughter’s first donor did not only save her life, but they also saved our entire family.”
The mother also shed light on how it was the ultimate gift you could ever give a person. “Every night I go to sleep thinking and wondering if we will get that call. We are trying to stay positive,” she added.
Both Martha and her twin sister developed a serious viral infection, just a few weeks before their first birthday. While sister Matilda managed to make it through with a full recovery, Martha went on to develop a heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy.
This is where an enlarged heart can no longer pump blood efficiently around the body, making it hard for an individual to survive.
At that time, one of Gill’s friends happened to be a heart specialist who referred her to a hospital so her daughter would be treated, right after she started showing severe symptoms like wheezing, sweating, vomiting, and even fatigue.
This time around, the family says they’re waiting for another miracle to help save their daughter’s life as she battles end-stage heart failure after doctors found fluid in her lungs.
