A bride’s furious parents are suing a hotel and a wedding planner in Brooklyn for $5 million, claiming that the big celebration was destroyed because the venue would not allow them to turn up the music.
Russell and Marjorie Newman have taken legal action against Brooklyn Pier 1 Hotel, saying they did not disclose a ‘severe’ noise restriction.
In a lawsuit filed in Brooklyn Supreme Court, the parents said that the couple’s first dance was ruined as the DJ refused to increase the volume of the music, leaving the bride ‘hysterically crying.’
They also said that the couple and their 200 guests had to squeeze into a room meant for only 60 people and had seating for less than 12 guests when it came to dancing and playing music.
“There was nowhere to sit,” Marjorie, who is also suing the wedding planner, said. “There was not one flower in that room.
“Most of the adults, besides our very good friends and family, left at this point because really no one had a clue of what was going on.”
Speaking to the New York Post, Marjorie said: “It was very, very devastating. This was supposed to be her night to shine and it was all taken away from her.”
Their daughter, Jessica, tied the knot with Matt Alovis, at the hotel on September 18 last year.
However, they were allegedly told by the venue that there was a new rule restricting any loud noise. This meant that they could only enjoy music at a ‘woefully low’ level.
According to reports, the hotel implemented the noise restriction because of residential condos within the building.
The restriction was reportedly introduced at least three weeks before the wedding.
But Jessica’s father said the hotel ‘never made them aware.’
Russell explained: “They never brought us in to say, ‘This is what it is going to sound like or not sound like,’ they never gave us the opportunity to move the venue.”
Lawyer Sanford Rubenstein told Daily Mail: “To turn a beautiful dream into a nightmare and spoil one of the most important days in a girl’s life – her wedding day – in my opinion is an example of corporate greed at its worst.”
