One couple has won a major battle concerning the mortgage approval for their first home after a bank initially declined the offer due to a non-binary title.
Ruth Roberts and her spouse G found out how G’s “Mx” title would not be accepted as a part of their application’s submission process. Moreover, they were also informed about how the bank could only accept the titles “Miss” or “Mrs”.
Since the 43-year-old’s full name is Mx G C Sabini-Roberts and the fact that their bank accounts, as well as their driving license, includes it was enough for them to convince their point in the courtroom.
At first, the duo had great fears regarding the move as it was a dream for them to have their own place in Shropshire.
“We just didn’t want our decision to fall through. We’ve been planning this move for so long”- they explained.
But in the end, the couple came out victorious as they managed to force their way into persuading Halifax to make a giant u-turn, right after registering their complaint.
Now, both Ruth and G hope that the new decision turns into a major landmark victory and assists them in shaping the way for more non-binary customers or anyone that plans on using the subtitle “Mx” in the future for similar decisions.
The couple has also now been told that their mortgage offer is being amended in a manner that paves the way for this historic decision.
A very relieved G celebrated the decision by stating the following: “It is a flag in the sand for acceptance for trans and non-binary people”.
The couple has reportedly been together for the past four years and they first found out that using G’s name would not be accepted on the bank application on January 20.
