President Joe Biden plans to impose stronger sanctions directly on Russian president Vladimir Putin, the White House has announced.
According to reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be targeted as well.
The United Kingdom and the European Union announced that they would impose sanctions targeting Putin and Lavrov.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a press briefing: “In alignment with the decision by our European allies, the United States will join them in sanctioning President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov and members of the Russian national security team.”
Psaki also said the travel ban “would be a part of the US component” in sanctions on Lavrov and Putin.
Reports say that Putin will become the highest target to be hit after the White House imposed sanctions on Russian banks and officials.
According to Bloomberg, Putin’s annual income is about 10 million rubles ($120,050), and he has an apartment and three vehicles.
There are also reports the Russian president’s estimated worth is $200 billion and he owns a superyacht worth $100 million.
Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and discussed stronger sanctions on Russia.
“Strengthening sanctions, concrete defense assistance and an anti-war coalition have just been discussed with @POTUS. Grateful to (U.S.) for the strong support to (Ukraine)!” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter.
Zelenskyy also took to the streets of the Ukraine capital to say “we are still here” as troops tried to slow down Russian advances.
“We are here. We are here in Kyiv. We are defending Ukraine,” he said in a video shared on Facebook.
There are fears Zelenskyy may be killed and replaced by a Russian official.
Before their 40-minute call, Biden also had a virtual meeting with NATO members to reassure allies will be protected.
