A wife has revealed that her mother-in-law told her how she broke her heart by making her son do some household chores.
The exasperated wife explained that she invited her in-laws over to stay with them. However, her mother-in-law started expressing her opinions on the overall organization of their home.
But things got even more frustrating as she started making snide remarks about her son doing chores after he served them lunch.
“She kept insinuating things throughout the whole lunch, saying, ‘I can teach you some cooking, it is a bad omen to make your husband cook’,” the woman wrote on Reddit.
“I obviously do know how to cook. In fact, once I come back from work I am the one preparing dinner for both me and my husband and taking care of the undone.
“When my husband was sweeping, she rushed to him as though he was a kid playing with fire or something and started sweeping for him.
“Every minor chore he would do during the time she stayed over, she would either glare me down until I took over or she would snidely tell him ‘Ask her to do it.’”
Three days after her in-laws left, the woman received a phone call from her mother-in-law.
“She said she was feeling depressed for days because he was brought up never having to do housework at his own house and seeing ‘me making him do chores’ is breaking her heart,” she said.
People on Reddit were quick to reassure the woman that she didn’t do anything wrong.
“Honestly, if your mother-in-law keeps bringing it up, assure her that, despite his upbringing to keep him completely dependent, he is a competent human being who strives to be a partner and not a burden,” one person wrote.
“No parent should be proud of the fact that they didn’t teach their children how to take care of themselves.”
Another commented: “I come from a family that only let women clean and do everything. The men can order you to get water and tea and whatever they want.
“She brought him up to never do chores, so she made him incompetent? It doesn’t work like that anymore and I am so happy you’re making him do something. You deserve to take it easy just as much as he does.”
