A supermarket has sparked a debate after placing coffins and urns on display next to barbecues.
Leaving shoppers stunned, the Costco store in North Lakes, Brisbane, exhibited sample coffins next to ads for barbecues and kitchen design.
“Appropriately you can view this as a last minute impulse buy at the checkout,” the shopper who shared a photo of the display wrote.
The picture quickly went viral with some people suggesting the retailer was tone-deaf for displaying products of sensitive nature right next to BBQs.
Others, however, praised the store for selling affordable coffins and providing the shoppers with an option to opt for much more affordable resting places than those typically offered by funeral homes.
“Do they deliver or do you need to drive away with it strapped to your car roof?” one person joked.
“In case you want to throw a BBQ party at a funeral they’ve got you covered!” another said.
The third wrote: “I did a double-take when I spotted them for sale. Not quite what I expected.”
Not everyone, however, appeared to be amused by the store’s “bold” idea with some people suggesting the display was in “awful taste.”
“They could place it somewhere less obvious than next to barbecues and kitchen stuff!” someone said.
“I like the idea but a bit of planning wouldn’t hurt anyone,” another added.
The majority of people, nevertheless, praised the chain for “standing up to” funeral homes by offering an alternative to expensive caskets and coffins.
“It will mean local funeral homes will actually have to lower their prices to complete, a good thing. This has been a money maker for many years in the American stores,” one person noted.
