Meghan Markle’s latest interview with New York magazine The Cut caused jaws to drop as she made a series of apparent swipes at the Royal Family.
Talking about their decision to step down from their royal duties and leave the UK, the Duchess of Sussex said that it was ‘bittersweet,’ adding that none of it had to be this way.’
She also said that she wanted to earn their own money so the media could stop attacking them under the ‘guise of public interest’ as their lives were not taxpayer-funded anymore.
“Then maybe all the noise would stop,” Meghan said, adding that they were willing to go to any commonwealth country, including New Zealand, Canada, or South Africa.
“Anything to just… because just by existing, we were upsetting the dynamic of the hierarchy.”
Meghan also talked about how “toxic tabloid culture has torn two families apart.”
She is quoted saying: “Harrys said to me, ‘I lost my dad in this process.’ It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision.”
Her remark was interpreted as Harry ‘lost’ his father Prince Charles but the couple’s allies were quick to explain that Meghan meant her relationship with her own father.
In the interview, Meghan recounted an encounter she had at the London premiere of a live-action version of The Lion King in 2019.
The Duchess of Sussex said that a South African cast member pulled her aside.
“He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, ‘I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.’”
