Mariah Carey has spoken out about the awkward moment she made Meghan Markle sweat by calling her a diva.

In her second Archetypes episode, titled ‘The Duality of Diva,’ the Duchess of Sussex spoke to singer Mariah Carey and admitted she saw the performer as her idol when she was growing up because she was also of mixed race.

The Duchess, however, appeared to be taken aback when the singer called her a diva – a term commonly used to describe self-absorbed and self-important people who expect special treatment and behave like they are better than the rest after their initial success.

“It stopped me in my tracks. I started to sweat a little bit. I started squirming in my chair in this quiet revolt,” Meghan said at the end of the episode.

“My mind genuinely was just spinning with what nonsense she must have read or clicked on to make her say that.”

Now, Carey doubled down on calling Meghan a diva but explained that she used the term with its original, positive connotation in mind.

“Really enjoyed talking to Duchess and Diva Meghan Markle about ‘The Duality of Diva.’ Yes! I called her a diva, in the most fabulous, gorgeous, and empowering meaning of the word!!!” the singer tweeted after the word had spread.

Carey’s comments come shortly after the Duchess herself explained to her listeners that the singer used the word diva as a compliment rather than an insult.

“She must have felt my nervous laughter and you all would have heard it too, and she jumped right in to make sure I was crystal clear,” Meghan said.

“When she said diva, she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture of a clothing, a quote unquote fabulousness as she sees it.

“She meant diva as a compliment. I heard it as a dig. Heard it as the word diva as I think of it, but in that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as aspirational.”
