James Bond star Daniel Craig has paid tribute to the Queen who died ‘peacefully’ at Balmoral aged 96.
“I, like so many, was deeply saddened by the news today and my thoughts are with the royal family, those she loved and all those who loved her,” the 54-year-old actor said in a heartwarming statement to the PA news agency.
He once joined the Queen as the spy for their Olympic sketch in 2012.
“She leaves an incomparable legacy and will be profoundly missed,” he concluded.
The sketch Craig filmed with Her Majesty saw the two leaving Buckingham Palace in a helicopter for the Opening Ceremony of London Games.
The Queen’s son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, is now King Charles III.
Her children reportedly rushed to Balmoral after doctors said that they were ‘concerned’ for her health. Only hours later, she passed away surrounded by her loved ones.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson announced the Queen’s passing at 6:30 pm, saying: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Her Majesty’s death will see the country and her Commonwealth realms enter into a 10-day period of mourning.
There will also be a celebration of her 70-year reign that saw her reach Platinum Jubilee in June this year.
Tributes are pouring in for the Queen. To her subjects at home, she was the nation’s anchor. To billions of people around the world, Queen Elizabeth was the very face of Britishness.
Her passing came more than a year after her husband Prince Philip, her strength and guide, passed away at the age of 99 in April 2021.
