The woman who allegedly served as an inspiration for the creation of a beloved character that appeared in a Pixar movie has passed away.
Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, 109, was a “life model” and “tireless woman” who was nicknamed Mama Coco after inspiring a character of the same name in the Pixar movie Coco.
According to Roberto Monroy, the Michoacan Secretary of Tourism, the woman died in her hometown of Santa Fe de la Laguna more than a century after being born in the same town.
As of this writing, the cause of her death remains unclear.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, ‘Mama Coco,’ a tireless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character that went around the world,” Monroy expressed in a statement.
“I pray for her eternal rest and for her family to find peace of mind.”
Caballero became better known as Mama Coco after a character made in her image appeared in the animated movie Coco under that same name.
In the movie, young musician Miguel challenges his family’s ban on music and makes his way to the Land of the Dead to meet a legendary singer – his great-great-grandfather.
While Disney, the parent company of Pixar, never officially recognized Maria’s role in the creation of the character Mama Coco, the woman’s family spoke out and claimed they were visited by Pixar who took several photos of the grandmother.
The family also insisted that the Pixar team lived with them for some time, presumably to learn more about their lifestyle and habits.
Maria is survived by 3 children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our thoughts are with the entire family.
