A hospital called child protective services on an unsuspecting woman in labor who ate a bagel shortly before being admitted to the hospital.
The bizarre incident takes place in New Jersey where 29-year-old makeup artist Caitlyn Marie Ricci ate an ‘everything bagel’ for breakfast on the day she was admitted to the hospital to give birth.
Little did Caitlyn know that the ‘everything bagel’ contained poppy seeds which contain very small amounts of morphine.
When at the hospital, the mother-to-be underwent a drug test that is required before delivery thinking nothing would show up because she was clean.
Much to her shock, however, the test came back positive, prompting hospital staff to inform Child Protective Services and spark an investigation into the young lady.
As it turned out, the morphine content in the poppy seeds the mother ate earlier that morning was high enough to show up on her tests even though her child tested negative for opioids.
“I just had a baby eight days ago, I just wanted to share a little bit about my experience because I don’t think anyone should have to go through some of the things I went through,” Caitlyn said as she recalled her ordeal.
“I feel like the OB offices need to be more transparent about potential things that could happen. I get to the hospital to get induced at 39 weeks and they drug test you in New Jersey hospitals, which is not a big deal, I wasn’t worried about it.
“But they come back and tell me that my drug test came back positive for opioids – opioids?! I was like, ‘Uh no, definitely not. Did you mix my sample up? I’m very confused.’”
The 29-year-old mom continued: “My husband and I realized, we had everything bagels that morning. The nurse was like, ‘[Did you have] a good amount of poppy seeds?’ We were like, ‘Oh my God, we had everything bagels this morning.’”
Unfortunately, Caitlyn’s ordeal didn’t end with her explanation about her breakfast involving everything bagels.
As she claimed, the hospital staff told her they were forced to report the test results to CPS who launched a child neglect case and interviewed the mom.
She was allegedly also forced to perform a urine test in front of state officials four days after she had given birth.
“They interviewed me in the hospital and had to come and check my home before I could even leave the hospital with the baby,” she added.
“They came back again once the baby was here, and [made me] take another drug test four days after having a C-section.”
Following a urine test, an interview at the hospital, and two home checks, the CPS finally appeared satisfied with their findings as they stopped reaching out to the family.
“I feel like this needs to be something that’s told [to patients] because I would have skipped the bagel had I known that this was gonna happen,” Caitlyn says.
“Long story short, avoid poppy seeds in your third trimester, especially if your hospital drug tests because this is something that could potentially happen.”
