Whoopi Goldberg has joined in the Twitter exodus after Elon Musk’s controversial takeover.
Hundreds of thousands of people, including some high-profile celebrities, have reportedly deleted or deactivated their Twitter accounts after billionaire Elon Musk took over the platform and took immediate action to ensure everyone has the right to express themselves and speak freely.
As the critics of Musk’s initiative warned, there is a thin line between free speech and hate speech, whereas lack of consequences for words said could serve as a gateway for spreading hate and misinformation.
While the majority of celebrities who have since left the platform are left-leaning, multiple right-wing profiles have welcomed the Tesla chief as the new Twitter boss and applauded him for insisting on defending free speech saying the left previously silenced or shut down Republican voices such as Donald Trump.
Announcing her decision to leave Twitter, Goldberg said: “I’m going to get out, and if it settles down and I feel more comfortable, maybe I’ll come back. But as of tonight, I’m done with Twitter.”
Speaking on The View, the TV personality claimed that the platform became “messy” as she suggested that “some speech” is “not OK free speech.”
“I’m getting off. I’m getting off today because I just feel like, you know, it’s so messy,” she added.
Adding to the debate, Sunny Hostin pitched in saying: “You’ve got this Elon Musk turning it into something that it was never intended to be. It’s going to be the public square.
“Well I don’t want to be part of that public square, but I also don’t want to miss the valuable information that can be put on there.”
The news of Goldberg’s departure from Twitter comes shortly after Gigi Hadid left the platform saying it has become a “cesspool of hate.”
“For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its [sic] not a place I want to be a part of,” the model wrote on Saturday.
