The man who’s been living in the middle of a busy roundabout has spoken out and revealed why he refuses to move.
Clwyd and Anwen Howatson from Denbighshire, Wales, have been living at their home inside a traffic circle for four decades after officials decided to build a roundabout around their land to connect several roads when traffic in the area began to rise.
As Mr. Howatson revealed, he and his family aren’t bothered by the traffic that surrounds them which is why they refuse to give up on their family home and move away.
“62 years I have lived here and there are many happy memories. Before, we had lived across the road,” he said.
“We get the odd accident and loads of drivers went the wrong way when the roundabout first opened but it happens rarely now.
“We love the view of the mountains and we have no neighbors encroaching on us.”
The Howatson house lies directly in the middle of the roundabout island and is connected to the circle via a private path.
Back in the early 1960s, before the roundabout was built, the house was surrounded by just one road and a train track.
While the family was not used to lots of vehicles passing by, they are now allegedly accustomed to the noise and no longer bothered by constant traffic.
“You get used to the noise. I don’t hear the cars anymore,” Mrs. Howatson says.
“The two main questions we get asked are ‘how do you get off the roundabout and is it noisy?’ But the traffic is only going one way so it’s not that difficult to get out.”
“It’s like living anywhere else on the side of a busy road. It’s just it’s all the way around us. But it’s a lot noisier next to the A55 dual carriageway. At least here motorists have to slow,” Mr. Howatson added.
