But it came after hundreds had sacrificed their lives in the name of protests after a young girl had been tortured to death for refusing to wear a headscarf in public.Rekabi was outlined as taking part in a foreign competition without her hijab but little did she know about the sentiments of the Iranian government toward this ordeal back home.
Her entire residence was razed down to the ground by bulldozers and now, viral images featuring the tragic aftermath are taking center stage on social media.
Her brother is witnessed standing next to the rubble and crying. Both the athlete and her brother had been arrested after they returned back to their home country after the tournament began in South Korea in October.
Many felt the move was a symbol of solidarity of protests in her country which arose when a young female was tortured in police custody. Her name was Mahsa Amini.
