Brittney Griner has returned home following a prisoner exchange with Russia.
The WNBA star was previously convicted on drug charges after she was caught in possession of cannabis oil while vacationing in Russia.
Following her trial, the 32-year-old basketballer was sentenced to nine years in prison – a sentence that was deemed highly exaggerated.
Griner was since her conviction moved to a notorious Russian penal colony where inmates are subjected to physical violence and forced labor for the majority of their days.
Now, however, the WNBA star returned home following a US prisoner exchange with Russia. As it was revealed, the States traded high-profile Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner in a swap that took place in the UAE.
Following her return home, Griner stayed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio where she reportedly enjoyed a light workout before returning to the court and scoring a slam dunk as part of a casual practice.
“If she wants to play, it will be for her to share. She has the holidays to rest and decide what’s next without any pressure,” the athlete’s agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, told ESPN.
Meanwhile, White House spokesman John Kirby confirmed the news while revealing that Griner was in a very good mood on her flight back home.
“She was in very, very good spirits when she got off the plane and appeared to be, obviously, in good health,” he told MSNBC.
Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was believed to be the most prominent American to be detained abroad at the time of her imprisonment and before the prisoner exchange backed by President Joe Biden.
