Drew Barrymore has finally explained why she doesn’t want to buy any presents for her children for Christmas.
The 47-year-old Hollywood star previously sparked a debate after revealing her children, including daughters Frankie, 8, and Olive, 10, don’t get any Christmas presents from her.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the ’50 First Dates’ star now revealed the reasoning behind her decision as she doubled down on her ‘no Christmas gifts’ policy.
“I always take them on a trip every Christmas. I don’t get them presents, which I think at their ages they don’t love, but I say, ‘I think we’ll remember the place and the photos and the experience and that’s what I want to give you,’” she said.
Instead of offering presents such as toys, Barrymore takes her kids on trips and vacations so that they can build life memories instead.
“They get plenty of things throughout the year, so I’m not like some weird, strict, cold mom who’s like, ‘You don’t get any gifts!’ I just feel like a better gift would be a life memory. I’d rather invest [in that than in] a doll house or something. It all evens out and it’s fine. I’m glad I do what I do,” the actress added.
Barrymore also admitted that the one time she did buy her kids gifts was in 2020 when traveling was restricted due to Covid-19.
As she claimed, however, gifting “sucked” and could not compare with what the family does now.
Following her straightforward and slightly controversial explanation, Barrymore received a mixed response from social media users.
“That’s awesome! My husband is the same way. He doesn’t buy me gifts but he takes me places and I really do like it,” one fan wrote.
“I think it’s a better idea than buying junk that kids end up throwing away in a few months,” another said.
Not everyone, however, agreed with the 47-year-old Hollywood star.
“Not all of us can afford to take our families on trips every Christmas and there’s nothing wrong with spending Christmas opening gifts in the comfort of a warm home,” one netizen argued.
“I mean traveling with your family is nice and all but there’s nothing wrong with a few gifts either…” another suggested.
