In the past we covered some
really, really small babies, but this baby from Sumatra, Indonesia are the exact opposite: they’re HUGE!
A hospital on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia had attracted much attention for something very unique. A woman named Ani had given birth to a baby that was big.
Baby Akbar (Akbar means “the Great” in Arabic) weighed almost 20 pounds and was nearly 24 inches tall when he was born. Akbar is currently the heaviest baby ever born in Indonesia. Akbar fell short of the world record held by a baby born in 1879 at 23 pounds!

It is believed that Akbar’s weight is due to his mother’s diabetes. For such an extreme case, the doctors were forced to perform a cesarean delivery (also known as a c-section). Even with the best doctors available, the surgery was very much touch and go for over 40 minutes.
Dr. Binsar Sitanggang told Agence France-Presse the difficulties they faced delivering the baby:
This heavy baby made the surgery really tough, especially the process of taking him out of his mum’s womb. His legs were so big
Thankfully due to the skilled doctors, the birth was a success and both Ani, Akbar’s mother, and Akbar himself were healthy following the delivery.
This wasn’t Ani’s first big baby delivery either, although Akbar is definitely way bigger! Ani birthed one son at 11.
6 pounds and another at 9. 9 pounds. There’s no way I could keep delivering babies of that size! After the birth, Ani’s job wasn’t over as Akbar already had a big appetite and nursed nonstop! Dr. Binsar Sitanggang expressed his own surprise at the baby’s constant eating.
He’s got a strong appetite, it’s almost nonstop feeding

Akbar’s weight rivals that of a one-year-old baby and you can really see the massive size difference between him and other new born babies above. That isn’t all that is unique about him, however. Dr. Binsar Sitanggang explained that the baby has a unique cry
This baby boy is extraordinary; the way he’s crying is not like a usual baby. It’s really loud.
Father Muhammad Hasanuddin was very happy that the delivery went well, but jokingly expressed concern of feeding the baby.
“I hope I can afford to feed the baby enough, because he needs more milk than other babies.”
We can only imagine how much he will eat when he hits his teenage years! Clothes shopping will be quite difficult, too!
As many crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the huge baby, his mother, Ani, was all smiles. The bigger size just gives Ani more to love! She’s truly an incredible mother for going through a delivery like that and still managing to be so happy.
