Many social media users were unhappy that Evan Peters scooped the Golden Globe Best Actor award for portraying the cannibal serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
On Tuesday, the 35-year-old star received the award for his impressive performance in the controversial Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
He left viewers on the edge with his depiction of the notorious killer who took the lives of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
When he was given the award, the American Horror Story star thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the creator, and the post-production team as the show became one of the most-watched series in Netflix’s history.
“It was a colossal team effort. Everyone gave it their all and I would not be up here without them. I want to thank my family, friends, and loved ones who carried me to the finish line,” he went on.
He also thanked the viewers and said: “And last but most importantly I want to thank everyone who watched the show. It was a difficult one to make, a difficult one to watch but I sincerely hope some good came out of it.”
But many viewers were quick to slam Peters’ speech, with many saying that he didn’t mention Dahmer’s victims.
One person wrote: “Evan Peters not acknowledging the victims and their families AT ALL. Nominating him in the first place? That series was literally disgusting.”
Another said: “Don’t cancel me but I think some sort of [acknowledgment] of the victims was the least Evan Peters could do during his acceptance speech.. a tad disappointed ngl, esp after all the backlash and feedback it got from victims’ real-life family members.”
A third said: “No good came out of that show Evan Peters except for the retraumatizing of the victims’ families.”
